Sargent County, North Dakota

Sargent County located in south east North Dakota. It contains a total of 547,200 acres, and was created out of the southern half of Ransom County and named in honor of H.E. Sargent, who was an official of the Northern Pacific Railroad.  Forman is the county seat of Sargent County.  The courthouse pictured here was built in 1910 and is in the National Registry of Historical Places.  It is open from 9:00-4:30 Monday through Friday.  In 1997, Sargent County commissioned renowned artist Del Iron Cloud to recreate the murals on the ceiling of the rotunda dome in the courthouse.  There are four separate painting depicting various themes of Sargent County's history.  These paintings are visual reminders of the county's history and well worth a stop at the courthouse to view them.
 

The Sargent County Museum, located just north of Forman on ND Highway 32, is a wonderful museum under the supervision of our County Historical Society.  You can plan to spend at least two hours viewing the artifacts and touring the museum.  It is open Tuesday through Friday in the afternoon and Sunday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.

There are three school districts in the county:  Sargent Central serving the cities of Forman, Cogswell, Havana, Rutland and Cayuga with all grades attending school in Forman.  North Sargent is located in Gwinner; and Milnor School district is located in the town of Milnor.
 
 

There are many fine lakes in the county including Buffalo Lake pictured here, and Silver Lake.  While Buffalo Lake is known for its fishing, Silver Lake is an ideal lake for camping, swimming, boating and picnicking.  Some of the facilities include:  Picnic areas with shelters, swimming beach, playground, horseshoe court, 20 hookup campground with bathroom/showers, and a volleyball court.
